WASHINGTON -UNS: Egypt’s increasingly close military and strategic engagement with China has reportedly triggered a sharp warning from Washington, with Israeli media reporting that US officials have threatened to suspend or cut military assistance to Cairo unless the Egyptian leadership curbs the expanding scope of its defence relationship with Beijing.
According to Israel Hayom, the reported US pressure reflects growing concern within Washington over Egypt’s deepening military and technological cooperation with China, particularly as bilateral defence contacts, joint military exercises and security coordination continue to broaden.
The development highlights a potentially serious fault line in Egypt’s traditionally close strategic relationship with the United States. Washington has long regarded Egypt as a pivotal security partner in the Middle East, while US military assistance has remained an important component of Cairo’s defence establishment.
The reported threat also underscores mounting Israeli concern over China’s expanding strategic footprint in Egypt. Closer military interaction between Cairo and Beijing could provide Egypt with access to alternative defence technologies, equipment and strategic capabilities, potentially reducing its dependence on Western military suppliers.
Cairo, however, has not publicly framed its expanding relationship with Beijing as an attempt to abandon or replace its longstanding partnership with Washington. Instead, Egypt has pursued a policy of strategic diversification, seeking to widen its military and technological partnerships while preserving greater freedom of manoeuvre in matters of national security and defence policy.
From Washington’s perspective, however, such diversification may increasingly be viewed not merely as economic pragmatism but as a potential strategic challenge. The expansion of Chinese defence cooperation in a country of Egypt’s geopolitical weight could complicate US military influence in the region and create new channels for Chinese access to sensitive strategic infrastructure and capabilities.
The reported US warning therefore carries implications extending well beyond the immediate issue of military aid. It points to a broader contest over strategic alignment, defence technology, military interoperability and regional influence, with Egypt increasingly positioned between two competing power centres.
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s engagement with Egypt consequently assumes added strategic significance. Relations between Cairo and Beijing are no longer confined to trade, investment and infrastructure; they are increasingly intersecting with defence, advanced technology and national security.
If the reported US threat materialises into concrete restrictions on military assistance, Egypt could face mounting pressure to choose how far it is prepared to take its military relationship with China without jeopardising its critical defence ties with Washington.
The emerging confrontation reflects a wider struggle for influence in the Middle East, in which Egypt’s strategic balancing between Washington and Beijing is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain without provoking resistance from one side or the other.
