UNS- Iranian state television and the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) have reportedly broadcast public safety instructions outlining precautionary measures to be taken in the event of a nuclear attack, amid heightened regional tensions and growing concerns over the possibility of further military escalation.
The guidance reportedly addresses public safety during and after a nuclear explosion, including avoiding direct exposure to intense flashes of light, taking immediate shelter, protecting the body from radioactive contamination and following basic decontamination procedures.
Among the measures communicated are instructions to lie flat and seek cover during an explosion, remove potentially contaminated clothing, seal it in airtight bags, wash exposed skin with lukewarm water and avoid consuming unpackaged food or water that may have been exposed to radioactive fallout.
The public has also reportedly been advised to remain inside protected shelters for at least 24 hours, unless authorities issue further instructions or conditions require otherwise.
The broadcast of nuclear emergency preparedness instructions carries significance beyond routine public safety communication. It demonstrates an effort to familiarise the population with emergency procedures in the event of an extreme security contingency.
From a strategic communications perspective, the initiative may serve several purposes: strengthening domestic preparedness, reducing public vulnerability to panic, reinforcing national resilience and communicating to external audiences that Iranian authorities are considering a broad range of potential security scenarios.
However, the dissemination of nuclear survival guidance does not, by itself, establish that Iranian intelligence or military authorities possess specific information about an imminent nuclear strike.
It is equally important to distinguish between civil defence preparedness, strategic signalling and psychological messaging. Governments may issue contingency instructions as a precaution without having confirmed intelligence of an impending attack.
