GULF REGION -UNS : As the security environment around the Strait of Hormuz becomes increasingly uncertain, some liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from the Gulf appear to be exploring alternative maritime arrangements to reduce the risks associated with direct passage through the strategic waterway.
Recent vessel-tracking data indicates that at least three LNG cargoes have undergone ship-to-ship transfers outside the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks before continuing onward to major Asian markets, including India and Japan.
In one operation off the coast of Oman, a Qatari LNG cargo was transferred from its original vessel to another tanker outside the Strait before proceeding towards its final destination.
A similar arrangement was reportedly used for another Qatari cargo after its original vessel was involved in an incident near the Strait of Hormuz. The cargo was subsequently transferred to a second vessel off the UAE coast and later continued its journey to India.
A UAE-linked LNG shipment also underwent a comparable ship-to-ship transfer off Oman, allowing the cargo to continue towards Japan while reducing the need for the original vessel to undertake the entire voyage through the risk-prone area.
The developments highlight a fundamental vulnerability in the regional energy trade. Unlike crude oil, which can in some cases be redirected through alternative pipeline networks, LNG exports remain heavily dependent on specialised maritime transportation. Any sustained disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could therefore have a disproportionate impact on Gulf gas exports and Asian energy markets.
The stakes have increased further as regional LNG exports decline and Asian spot gas prices rise sharply, with prices reportedly reaching more than twice their pre-conflict levels. Under such circumstances, every LNG cargo successfully moved out of the Gulf assumes greater strategic and commercial significance.
Ship-to-ship transfers in international waters are not unprecedented and can serve legitimate logistical and commercial purposes. However, their increased use in the vicinity of Hormuz could indicate a broader effort by energy producers and shipping operators to manage maritime risks while maintaining access to overseas markets.
The key question is whether these exceptional arrangements will remain temporary contingency measures or evolve into a more systematic logistics model for Gulf LNG exports if instability around the Strait persists.
Strategic Assessment
The emerging pattern underscores the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz to global energy security. With LNG lacking the same degree of pipeline flexibility available to some oil exports, prolonged disruption could expose Gulf producers, shipping companies and Asian consumers to higher transportation costs, insurance premiums, delivery delays and further price volatility.
If maritime risks remain elevated, expanded use of offshore ship-to-ship transfers could become an important risk-management mechanism. However, such operations cannot fully substitute for the capacity, efficiency and predictability of normal LNG shipping routes.
The developments therefore merit close monitoring by regional security authorities, energy markets and maritime operators as the situation around the Strait of Hormuz continues to evolve.
