US Launches ‘Defensive Strikes’ Against Iranian Targets in Strait of Hormuz

WASHINGTON (Reuters): The United States has carried out what it described as “defensive strikes” against Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, following reports of explosions on Iran’s Qeshm Island, amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

An unnamed US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strikes targeted Iranian forces using surface-to-air missiles against American assets. The official was not authorized to comment publicly.
The attacks appeared limited in scope, rather than signaling a full-scale resumption of hostilities, and came just a day before crucial US midterm elections.

President Donald Trump had previously indicated that Washington would not launch strikes against Iran before the elections.
The ongoing conflict with Iran, along with its impact on US gasoline prices and the broader economy, has emerged as a political challenge for Republicans seeking to retain control of Congress.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance said Monday that he had spoken with President Trump about negotiations with Iran, expressing optimism over the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough.

“The president and I both feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement,” Vance told reporters.

The Pentagon referred inquiries regarding the strikes to US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations in the Middle East. CENTCOM had not responded to requests for comment at the time of reporting.

Earlier Monday, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported several explosions on Qeshm Island. The Wall Street Journal also reported that the latest attack was part of a series of US strikes carried out against Iranian targets in recent weeks.

The developments come as diplomatic efforts continue between Washington and Tehran, with the latest military action raising fresh concerns over the stability of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
