UNS: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has unveiled the ambitious “Wazir-e-Azam Apna Ghar Programme,” a five-year, Rs3.2 trillion initiative aimed at building 500,000 affordable homes across Pakistan. The scheme is designed to support low-income citizens in achieving homeownership while also stimulating economic growth.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister emphasized that the programme would not only provide housing but also generate employment and drive industrial activity. He described the initiative as one of his most important priorities, calling it a “sacred obligation” of the government to ensure access to shelter for disadvantaged groups.
Under the plan, loans will be offered with a 20-year repayment period and a concessional 5% markup for the first ten years. In its first phase, the government aims to finance 50,000 homes with an allocation of Rs321 billion. Over time, the programme will expand nationwide, covering all provinces as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The launch event was attended by senior officials, banking representatives, construction sector stakeholders, and beneficiaries who received loan cheques on the spot. The initiative builds on earlier housing efforts introduced by Shehbaz Sharif during his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, reflecting a broader push to address Pakistan’s housing shortage while boosting the economy.
