ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Thursday announced plans to forge a united opposition alliance following a meeting with Leader of the Opposition Mahmood Khan Achakzai at Parliament House.
Fazlur Rehman met Achakzai in his chamber to discuss greater coordination among opposition parties and the possibility of adopting a joint parliamentary strategy.
JUI-F leaders Kamran Murtaza and Maulana Wasey accompanied Fazlur Rehman, while Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai and Asad Qaiser were also present.
Speaking briefly to journalists before the meeting, Fazlur Rehman commented on the medical treatment of PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, saying that had the matter been in his hands, Khan would have received treatment by now.
Following the meeting, the JUI-F chief said consultations had taken place with opposition leaders in both the National
Assembly and Senate and that a principled agreement had been reached to move towards the formation of a united opposition.
He said opposition parties intended to play a coordinated role inside Parliament and that further meetings and consultations would be held to finalise the structure and strategy of the proposed alliance.
Fazlur Rehman also called for creating a conducive environment for an All-Parties Conference (APC) of opposition parties, expressing hope that the initiative would mark a positive beginning for broader political cooperation.
Responding to a question about whether the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) could become part of the proposed alliance, Fazlur Rehman said the PPP was currently part of the government.
