Iran Offers Strait of Hormuz Concession Without Nuclear Deal Amid Ongoing US Tensions

UNS: Iran has proposed easing its control over the Strait of Hormuz without addressing its nuclear program, according to two regional officials familiar with the discussions. In return, Tehran is seeking an end to the U.S. blockade on its economy. The proposal was reportedly conveyed to Washington via Pakistan but is unlikely to gain support from Donald Trump, who insists any agreement must include curbs on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Russia, arriving in St. Petersburg for talks with Vladimir Putin. Araghchi said the trip aimed to coordinate with Moscow on developments related to the conflict involving Israel and the United States.
Efforts to restart negotiations between Iran and the U.S., expected to take place in Islamabad, have stalled. Trump indicated talks could occur remotely instead, while criticizing Iran’s leadership as disorganized. Planned U.S. diplomatic visits to Pakistan were canceled due to lack of progress.
Tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. Iran has restricted traffic in the area, while the U.S. continues its blockade, keeping markets on edge. Brent crude prices have surged to about $107 per barrel, up sharply from $72 before the conflict began.
