Pakistan demarches US envoy over ambassador in India’s ‘irresponsible’ Kashmir remarks

ISLAMABAD (UNS): Pakistan on Wednesday summoned the United States Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad to lodge a strong demarche over remarks made by the US Ambassador to India regarding the status of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan strongly objected to the US envoy’s characterisation of IIOJK as a “part of India,” describing the remarks as factually incorrect and inconsistent with the disputed status of the territory.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, during a visit to the occupied region on Wednesday, reportedly described IIOJK as “an important part of India.”

In a statement, the Foreign Office strongly condemned and categorically rejected the characterisation, reiterating Pakistan’s position that Jammu and Kashmir remains an internationally recognised disputed territory.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said it was underscored during the demarche that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir remains to be determined in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Pakistan reiterated that statements concerning the disputed territory should remain consistent with its internationally recognised status and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
