The passing of His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani on July 12, 2026, marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Qatar’s history. Revered as the architect of modern Qatar, his leadership transformed a small Gulf state into a globally respected nation known for its economic strength, educational excellence, diplomatic influence, and world-class infrastructure.
Born in Doha in January 1952, Sheikh Hamad dedicated his life to the service of Qatar and its people. After receiving his early education in Qatar, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in 1971.
Upon returning home, he joined the Qatari Armed Forces, where he built a distinguished military career, eventually attaining the rank of Major General. His efforts to modernize the armed forces and strengthen national defense laid the groundwork for a more secure and capable state.
In 1977, Sheikh Hamad was appointed Crown Prince and Minister of Defence. As Chairman of the Supreme Council for Planning, he played a key role in shaping Qatar’s long-term economic and social development strategy. However, it was after assuming leadership on June 27, 1995, that his vision truly reshaped the nation.
Recognizing the immense potential of Qatar’s natural gas reserves, Sheikh Hamad accelerated the development of the North Field, one of the world’s largest natural gas reservoirs.
This strategic decision transformed Qatar into a leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), generating unprecedented economic growth and prosperity that continues to benefit the country today.
Education and innovation became central pillars of his national vision. In 1995, he established the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, placing knowledge, research, and innovation at the heart of Qatar’s future. Through the creation of Education City and partnerships with leading international universities, Qatar emerged as a regional hub for higher education and scientific advancement.
His commitment to openness and modernization also extended to the media sector. In 1996, the launch of Al Jazeera revolutionized Arab media, while the abolition of the Ministry of Information in 1998 signaled a new approach to media policy and public discourse.
Political reforms gained momentum under his leadership. Elections for the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry were held in 1996, followed by the country’s first Central Municipal Council elections in 1999. Women were granted the right to vote and run for public office, reflecting a progressive vision for civic participation.
The adoption of Qatar’s first permanent constitution in 2004 further strengthened democratic institutions, the rule of law, and public engagement.
On the international stage, Sheikh Hamad positioned Qatar as a respected mediator and diplomatic actor.
Through dialogue, peace initiatives, and constructive engagement, Qatar earned recognition as a trusted partner in regional and global affairs.
His leadership also fueled the rapid growth of Qatar Airways. Although established in 1993, the airline expanded significantly after 1997 with strong government support, becoming one of the world’s most acclaimed carriers and a symbol of Qatar’s global connectivity and ambition.
Healthcare remained another priority throughout his reign. Building upon the foundations of Hamad Medical Corporation and Hamad General Hospital, Qatar invested heavily in modern healthcare infrastructure, advanced medical services, and professional training. These investments substantially improved healthcare standards for both citizens and residents.
The vision for Hamad International Airport also originated during Sheikh Hamad’s leadership. While the airport was completed and further expanded under His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, it reflected the long-term planning initiated by the Father Amir.
Together with broader national development strategies, these efforts contributed significantly to Qatar’s successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup, making it the first Arab and Muslim nation to stage the prestigious tournament.
On June 25, 2013, Sheikh Hamad made history by voluntarily transferring power to his son and Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The peaceful transition demonstrated political maturity, stability, and confidence in the next generation of leadership. As Father Amir, he continued to serve as a respected national figure, offering guidance and support while remaining deeply admired by the Qatari people.
His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani leaves behind a remarkable legacy of transformation, vision, and nation-building. The modern Qatar that stands today—prosperous, influential, and forward-looking—is a testament to his leadership and foresight.
His achievements will remain woven into the fabric of Qatar’s history for generations to come.
“His Highness gave Qatar wings and trusted the next generation to fly.”
