ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly formally appointed President Tehafaz Ayen Pakistan and chief of Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) Mehmood Khan Achakzai as Leader of the Opposition.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq issued the notification and summoned PTI’s Amir Dogar to his chamber to hand over the official order.
During the session, PML-N leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry pointed out a two-day gap between sittings and noted that attendance in the House was lower than usual, proposing that the Question Hour be postponed. The Speaker, however, ruled out holding the Question Hour for the day and said proceedings would continue, adding that members had worked hard and business should not be delayed.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said the Speaker had earlier assured that the notification regarding the opposition leader would be issued on Thursday. He also remarked that he had recently learned that a single PTCL meeting costs $8,000, and compared parliamentary proceedings with neighboring India, where assemblies sit for at least six hours. In response, the Speaker said he would send the House business to the relevant committees, go to his chamber, and issue the notification.
Despite continued concerns over low attendance raised again by Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, legislative business proceeded.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented several bills in the House, including the Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council Ordinance, Railways Transfer (Amendment) Ordinance, National Tariff Commission (Amendment) Bill, Export Development Fund (Amendment) Bill, Export-Import Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2026, Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Amendment Bill, Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Amendment) Bill, Alternative Dispute Resolution (Amendment) Bill, and the Islamabad Capital Territory Property and Management Bill.
Meanwhile, the Speaker barred 32 members from entering the House for failing to submit details of their assets to the Election Commission of Pakistan. He directed that such members should not be marked present and asked any member whose name appeared on the list to leave the House voOpposition
