COLOMBO-UNS: The Super Eight match between Pakistan and New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 was abandoned without a ball being bowled after persistent rain at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
The downpour began shortly after Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha won the toss and chose to bat. Rain continued for more than two and a half hours, leaving large puddles on the field and forcing match officials to call off the contest well before the cut-off time for a five-over game.
Both Pakistan national cricket team and New Zealand national cricket team were awarded one point each, a result that further tightened Group 2 of the Super Eight stage, which also includes England and co-host Sri Lanka.
Pakistan, champions of the 2009 edition, will next face England at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, while New Zealand are scheduled to meet Sri Lanka the following day.
The top two teams from each Super Eight group will advance to the semi-finals on March 4 and 5. Under the tournament’s ‘Fusion Formula’, Pakistan are playing all their matches in Sri Lanka. If they qualify, the first semi-final will be staged in Colombo; otherwise, it will be shifted to Eden Gardens.
