Washington -UNS : In a significant indication of evolving US foreign policy priorities, US President Donald Trump announced that Iran is no longer Washington’s foremost strategic concern, signaling a renewed American focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Speaking during a meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on the sidelines of recent diplomatic engagements, Trump stated that while the US administration had devoted considerable attention to the Iranian file in recent months, priorities are now shifting toward the Ukrainian conflict.
The US president stressed that the war in Ukraine has become a matter of urgent concern for Washington, noting that American diplomatic efforts in the coming period will be directed toward securing a political settlement capable of ending the prolonged conflict and reducing its mounting human toll.
Trump also disclosed that he had held what he described as a “very successful” meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, adding that further rounds of talks are expected in an effort to advance negotiations aimed at ending the war.
Expressing concern over the continued loss of life in Ukraine, Trump emphasized his determination to pursue every available avenue to achieve a swift and lasting peace agreement.
The apparent shift in US priorities follows the announcement of a framework understanding between Washington and Tehran designed to de-escalate tensions and pave the way for a new phase of diplomatic engagement between the two sides.
Although Trump praised the agreement as an important step toward regional stability, several complex issues remain unresolved, including Iran’s nuclear program, maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, and economic sanctions imposed on Tehran.
Analysts suggest that the latest statements reflect a growing belief within the US administration that the Iranian dossier has entered a phase of political negotiation, while the conflict in Ukraine now represents the most pressing foreign policy challenge facing Washington.
The developments also underscore broader US efforts to recalibrate its foreign policy agenda amid an increasingly complex international landscape marked by overlapping security, economic, and geopolitical crises.
