BEIJING – UNS : US President Donald Trump said he discussed Taiwan and possible US arms sales to the island during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, adding that a decision on the matter would be announced soon.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday after concluding his China visit, Trump said the issue of Taiwan featured prominently in discussions with Xi. However, he maintained that he did not believe tensions over the island would escalate into conflict.
Trump said he made no commitments to the Chinese leadership regarding future US policy toward Taiwan. He also revealed that Xi asked whether Washington would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack, but he declined to give a direct response.
“There’s only one person that knows that, and it is me,” Trump said, adding that he preferred not to publicly discuss the matter.
Taiwan remains a major source of tension between Washington and Beijing. China considers the self-ruled island part of its territory and has repeatedly opposed US military support and weapons sales to Taipei.
Despite having no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, the United States remains the island’s leading international supporter and its largest arms supplier.
The Taiwan issue continues to be one of the most sensitive disputes in US-China relations, alongside trade, regional security, and strategic influence in Asia.
