ISLAMABAD: Serious questions have emerged over accountability following the tragic incident at the Children’s Hospital of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), with hospital sources alleging that officials responsible for overseeing key electrical and air-conditioning systems have escaped scrutiny.
According to highly placed sources at PIMS, the incident, which reportedly claimed the lives of 14 children, was linked to a fire allegedly involving air-conditioning and other electrical equipments i e non- medical.

The sources claimed that maintenance and oversight of the relevant systems fell under the administrative responsibilities of Joint Executive Director Chaudhry Waris.
The sources questioned why Waris was neither suspended nor publicly identified as being under investigation following the tragedy.
The official sources argued that a transparent inquiry should examine the entire chain of administrative responsibility, including maintenance, electrical safety, procurement, inspections and compliance with fire-safety standards.
Hospital sources further alleged that Ch .Waris has faced accusations relating to financial and administrative irregularities at PIMS in the past but has avoided disciplinary action due to alleged political backing.
The sources claimed that ED Dr Sikandar and Ch Waris are involved in billions of Rupees corruption in PIMS These claims have not been independently verified, and no finding of wrongdoing against him is established by the information available for this report.
Sources also claimed that Waris initially joined PIMS in a clerical position connected with the hospital kitchen and subsequently rose through the administrative hierarchy to a senior grade 20.
They called for an independent examination of his promotions, appointments and administrative record to determine whether all procedures and service rules were properly followed.
The sources alleged broader irregularities involving funds intended for poor patients, hospital food services and maintenance contracts.
They claimed that substantial public funds allocated for maintenance and patient welfare like foods, Medicines may have been misused in collusion with other officials.
Given the gravity of the allegations and the reported loss of young lives, hospital insiders have demanded an independent and transparent investigation covering the Children’s Hospital fire, maintenance and electrical systems, procurement contracts, expenditure of patient-welfare funds, and the role of every official responsible for safety and administration.
They stressed that responsibility should be determined on the basis of documentary evidence and a credible investigation rather than allowing influential officials to escape scrutiny.
The allegations against Chaudhry Waris and other officials require an official response.
Their position should be included in any final report, while authorities should publicly disclose the findings of the inquiry to establish whether negligence, administrative failure or financial wrongdoing contributed to the tragedy.(To be continued)
