LAHORE -UNS : Professor Dr Muhammad Afzal Javed has been honoured with the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by King Charles III in recognition of his exceptional contributions to mental health services worldwide.
The prestigious award was presented at a ceremony held at Windsor Castle on June 2, 2026, where King Charles III recognised individuals for their outstanding achievements and public service across various fields.
Prof Afzal Javed, former president of the World Psychiatric Association from 2020 to 2023 and a member of the executive committee of Fountain House, is internationally renowned for his efforts to advance mental health awareness, policy development, and service delivery.
Over the course of his distinguished career, he has played a pivotal role in training mental health professionals, strengthening healthcare systems, promoting capacity-building initiatives, and expanding access to sustainable mental health services, particularly in underserved regions.
He has also actively contributed to welfare organisations in the United Kingdom and supported numerous community-based mental health programmes.
In recognition of his significant national and international achievements, the Government of Pakistan previously awarded him the Sitara-i-Imtiaz.
Prof Afzal Javed is the elder brother of Dr Muhammad Amjad Saqib, founder of Akhuwat, who has also been honoured with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Hilal-i-Imtiaz for his contributions to social welfare.
