LONDON/ISLAMABAD/-UNS:Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will officially resume direct flights to the United Kingdom from October 25, marking a significant milestone after more than four years of suspension due to safety and licensing concerns.
The announcement was made by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif on Saturday, shortly after the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issued a Foreign Aircraft Operating Permit to PIA, removing the final regulatory obstacle. The permit grants PIA the right to operate commercial flights to and from the UK.
> “We have finally planned for the first flight to UK (Islamabad to Manchester and back) on October 25, God willing, with a weekly frequency of two flights,” Asif said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The initial phase of operations will see flights between Islamabad and Manchester, with plans to expand services to Birmingham and London in a second phase, according to the Pakistani High Commission in London.

PIA’s operations in the UK, US, and EU were suspended in 2020 following a fatal crash of a PIA Airbus A320 in Karachi that killed 97 people. The crash investigation revealed widespread irregularities in pilot licensing, leading to serious safety concerns and international scrutiny. As a result, multiple aviation regulators, including those in Britain, the US, and the European Union, imposed bans on PIA.
The UK lifted its restrictions on Pakistani carriers in July 2025, following significant reforms and audits of Pakistan’s civil aviation and pilot certification systems.
PIA also received the Third Country Operator (TCO) certification—required for non-EU carriers to operate in Europe—further paving the way for safe resumption of international services.
Implications for Pakistani Diaspora and Trade
The resumption of flights is expected to greatly benefit the over 1.7 million-strong Pakistani diaspora in the UK, offering them direct, cost-effective travel options to Pakistan.
> “PIA’s resumption to the UK will facilitate the more than 1.7 million Pakistani diaspora to travel conveniently to Pakistan,” the Pakistani High Commission stated.
The UK is Pakistan’s third-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at approximately £4.7 billion ($5.7 billion) annually. Improved air connectivity is likely to boost business, tourism, and people-to-people ties.
PIA’s Financial Struggles and Privatization Push
Despite the positive news, PIA continues to face deep financial troubles. The state-run airline has accumulated over $2.5 billion in losses over the past decade. It has frequently relied on government bailouts, becoming a major drain on Pakistan’s public finances.
As part of a $7 billion IMF loan program, the Pakistani government is aggressively pushing for the privatization of PIA, aiming to restructure loss-making state-owned enterprises and reduce the burden on the national budget.
EU Flights Suspended to Prioritize UK Relaunch
Earlier this year, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) lifted its suspension of PIA in November 2024, allowing the airline to resume services to Paris in January and later to Lahore–Paris in June 2025. However, these services were suspended again in recent months as the airline diverted resources to focus on its UK relaunch.
PIA remains barred from flying to the United States, where aviation authorities continue to monitor the airline’s compliance and safety reforms.
