PESHAWAR: Amid a deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial assembly has formally asking an in-camera briefing from the Peshawar corps commander on the prevailing security environment and ongoing military operations in the province.
In a letter issued by KP Assembly Deputy Secretary Tariq Noor, the assembly’s Special Committee on Security sought a detailed briefing from Headquarters XI Corps, Peshawar.
The letter states that the committee wishes to be briefed particularly on operations being carried out by the federal government and law enforcement agencies in the merged districts of the province.
The special committee, constituted by the house, comprises more than 40 members, including the leader of the house, the leader of the opposition, provincial ministers, and parliamentary leaders of various political parties.
Januray 8:
Dated January 8, the letter notes that the committee has already received briefings from key civilian stakeholders, including the chief secretary, additional chief secretary, and the inspector general of police, and now seeks the military’s perspective as part of its consultative process.
The request comes against the backdrop of a sharp rise in militant violence in the province. According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa accounted for nearly 71 per cent of all terrorist incidents reported in the country in 2025.
In a recent media briefing, the ISPR chief attributed the high number of attacks in KP to what he described as a “politically conducive environment and a flourishing political-criminal-terror nexus” in the province. He also alleged that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government in KP had resisted counterterrorism efforts at various forums, a claim rejected by the party.
Lt Gen Chaudhry:
Lt Gen Chaudhry further stated that law enforcement agencies conducted 75,175 intelligence-based operations nationwide in 2025, including 14,658 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Of the 5,397 terrorist incidents reported across the country during the year, 3,811 occurred in the province.
The issue of terrorism and the conduct of military operations has remained a major point of friction between the PTI-led KP government and the federal authorities, with the provincial government advocating political dialogue while the Centre continues to emphasise decisive action against militant groups.
