ISLAMABAD: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and hailstorms lashed several cities across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, causing urban flooding and disrupting electricity supplies in several areas.
A rain emergency was declared in Islamabad and Rawalpindi after torrential rainfall inundated low-lying areas. Heavy showers were also reported in Kohat, Karak, Mianwali and Dunyapur.
Several other areas, including Jhang, Chashma, Darya Khan, Kacha Gujrat and Pailan, also received significant rainfall. In Kundian, rainwater entered homes, while streets and residential neighbourhoods were flooded.
The heavy downpour also disrupted power supplies in a number of areas as electricity feeders tripped, causing inconvenience to residents.
In Rawalpindi, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) declared a rain emergency following the intense rainfall. According to the WASA managing director, all field officers were mobilised, while staff and heavy machinery were deployed to vulnerable and low-lying areas to deal with water accumulation.
Officials said the water level in Nullah Lai remained within normal limits, measuring five feet at Kattarian and two feet at the Gawalmandi Bridge.
The Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall, with authorities urging residents to remain alert as more downpours are expected.
