WASHINGTON UNS : Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has won re-election in the 2026 US midterm elections, securing another term representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives.
Omar defeated Republican candidate John Nagel in the November 3 election, winning approximately 76.5 per cent of the vote, according to unofficial results released by Minnesota election authorities. She will serve her fifth term in Congress.
Ilhan Omar has previously visited Pakistan, where she held meetings with the country’s political leadership, including former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.
During her maiden visit to Pakistan in April 2022, Omar met Imran Khan at his residence in Islamabad. She also held meetings with then-President Dr Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior Pakistani officials.
Her meeting with Imran Khan attracted considerable attention at the time, particularly amid tensions between Pakistan and the United States following the removal of Khan’s government through a no-confidence vote.
Omar’s re-election comes as Democrats seek to strengthen their position in the US Congress following the 2026 midterm elections.
