UNS- A container ship, the GFS Pride, sank in the Strait of Hormuz after an explosion reportedly involving a naval mine, according to maritime security sources cited by Reuters. All 21 crew members were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported, Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) said.
The vessel, which had a capacity of 2,824 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), was reportedly carrying more than 2,500 containers when the incident occurred.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said the ship had attempted to navigate an “unauthorised and dangerous” route through the strait before striking a naval mine and catching fire.
The incident comes amid a reported surge in attacks and security threats around the strategic waterway over the preceding 10 days, raising further concerns about maritime safety and commercial shipping through one of the world’s most important energy and trade corridors.
