Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Nawaz Khan: A Versatile and Unforgettable Personality of Kashmir

On the fifth death anniversary of Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Nawaz Khan, an invitation from his son, Sardar Bilal Nawaz Khan, brought back a flood of memories—both personal and profound. His legacy continues to live on in the hearts of those who knew him and the society he served with dedication and integrity.

Sardar Nawaz Khan earned widespread respect as a courageous, principled, and highly skilled lawyer. His approach to legal practice was marked by thorough preparation, deep research, and an unwavering commitment to justice. He handled cases with such precision that even the courts were compelled to recognize the strength of his arguments. Among the distinguished legal minds of Rawalakot, his name stands prominently alongside figures like Raja Sher Muhammad Khan.
His journey from a practicing lawyer to a judge, and eventually to Chief Justice of the Azad Kashmir High Court, reflects both his professional excellence and his moral character. Yet beyond the judiciary, he carried within him the spirit of a politician devoted to public welfare. He shared a close and trusted relationship with Sardar Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, the founding President of Azad Kashmir, and was later nominated for the presidency of the Jammu Kashmir Peoples Party by Sardar Khalid Ibrahim, securing the position with overwhelming support.

Throughout his life, whether as a lawyer, judge, or political leader, Sardar Nawaz Khan maintained a reputation for integrity, transparency, and service. His character set a standard that continues to inspire admiration across all segments of society. The people of Rawalakot, in particular, take immense pride in his contributions and legacy.
On a personal level, he was not only a respected public figure but also a valued neighbor and friend. Time spent in his company was always enriching, filled with lessons in discipline, ethics, and life—treasures that remain invaluable.

His legacy continues through his sons—Barrister Humayun Nawaz Khan and Barrister Adnan Nawaz Khan—as well as his cousin, Sardar Javed Sharif, all of whom have earned respect in their respective fields.
Indeed, personalities like Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Nawaz Khan are rare—individuals whose contributions leave an enduring mark on history and society. May Allah grant him the highest مقام in His mercy and bless his family with continued success and happiness. Ameen.
