AI Revolution Threatens Millions of White-Collar Jobs Amid Looming Economic Challenges

By Dr. Lubna Farah

The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to redefine the global labor market, with experts warning of widespread disruption to white-collar employment in the next 12 to 18 months. While AI promises unprecedented efficiency and productivity gains, economists caution that the transition may strain economies and exacerbate existing inequalities before potential benefits are realized.

According to the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Employment and Social Trends 2026 report, nearly 300 million workers worldwide continue to live in extreme poverty, earning less than $3 a day, as progress toward decent work stalls. The report highlights that demographic shifts, trade policy uncertainty, low foreign direct investment, and stagnant trade growth are likely to hinder meaningful improvements in working conditions, particularly in trade-related sectors.

The ILO projects global unemployment to remain around 4.9 percent in 2026—equivalent to 186 million people—but millions more lack access to quality jobs. “While unemployment rates may appear stable, the global workforce faces structural challenges that are intensifying with technological change,” the report states.

White-Collar Jobs at Risk

Experts warn that AI could soon automate a significant proportion of office-based work, from mid-career professionals to skilled technical staff. Andrew Yang, entrepreneur and former U.S. presidential candidate, has cautioned that millions of white-collar employees in the United States may face unemployment within the next 12 to 18 months as AI increasingly assumes tasks traditionally handled by humans.

A British think tank similarly estimates that up to 8 million white-collar jobs in the United Kingdom could be displaced if reliance on AI technologies is not moderated. Roles most at risk include call center operators, marketers, software developers, and administrative professionals. Yang described the impending shift as a potential “great disembowelling” of white-collar employment.

The Institute for Public Policy Research further notes that increased AI integration may diminish the economic value of jobs earning less than the top 25 percent of wages, with some roles potentially disappearing entirely.

Balancing AI Progress and Economic Stability

While AI offers long-term productivity gains, policymakers face a critical challenge: balancing innovation with social and economic stability. The report underscores the urgent need for investments in workforce reskilling, social protection, and labor policy reforms to mitigate the potential negative impacts of automation.

“The 21st century is forcing a fundamental rethink of work,” the ILO report concludes. “Without proactive measures, the transition to AI-driven labor markets risks deepening inequality, undermining economic resilience, and creating new social vulnerabilities.”

As AI technologies accelerate across industries, governments, businesses, and labor organizations are urged to act swiftly to manage the disruption and ensure that technological advancement benefits the broader workforce rather than leaving millions behind.
