Islamabad -UNS: Pakistan carried out air and ground counter-strikes against militant positions in Afghanistan after what it described as unprovoked cross-border attacks, killing scores of fighters and destroying key military installations, government and security sources said on Friday.
Security officials said jets of the Pakistan Air Force struck a major ammunition depot in Nangarhar province overnight as part of an operation launched in response to the attacks.
The operation, named Ghazab-lil-Haqq, was initiated after militants of the Afghan Taliban allegedly targeted Pakistani positions along the border, officials said.
Providing an update at 3:45am, Prime Minister’s spokesperson for foreign media Mosharraf Zaidi confirmed that counter-strikes were continuing against militant targets inside Afghanistan.
According to the latest official statement, at least 133 Taliban fighters were killed and more than 200 wounded. Additional casualties were reported from military targets in Kabul, Paktia, and Kandahar.
