RIYADH -UNS : Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement towards Riyadh early Saturday, according to the Saudi-led coalition.
Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki said the missile was detected and neutralised before it could reach its intended target.
He added that separate attempts to strike civilians and civilian infrastructure in Bisha, Taif, Farasan and Yanbu were also thwarted.
The interception came as a fire broke out at a fuel depot near Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport.
Firefighters later extinguished the blaze, which affected a fuel tank carrying the logo of Saudi oil company Aramco.
Videos circulating online showed thick black smoke rising above buildings near the airport. However, Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm whether the fire was directly linked to the intercepted missile or another attack.
