Islamabad -UNS.World Heritage Day was observed across the globe, including in Pakistan, on Saturday with renewed calls to safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage. The day aims to raise awareness about the diversity, significance, and vulnerability of heritage sites and traditions.
Also known as the International Day of Monuments and Sites, the occasion underscores the importance of preserving historical landmarks, cultural practices, and natural landscapes for future generations. It is observed annually on April 18 under the auspices of UNESCO, following a proposal by ICOMOS.
The theme for World Heritage Day 2026, announced by ICOMOS, is “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters.” It highlights the urgent need to protect cultural heritage from threats such as wars, climate change, and natural disasters, while strengthening resilience and preparedness.
Experts emphasize that heritage extends beyond physical monuments. It encompasses three key categories:
Cultural Heritage:
This includes both tangible and intangible elements passed down through generations. Tangible heritage covers monuments, architectural sites, and archaeological remains, while intangible heritage consists of traditions, languages, rituals, performing arts, and craftsmanship that live within communities.
Natural Heritage:
Natural heritage refers to landscapes, ecosystems, and biodiversity of outstanding universal value. These sites often play a crucial role in conservation and support unique or endangered species.
Mixed Heritage:
Some sites combine both cultural and natural significance, reflecting the deep connection between people and their environment.
The origins of World Heritage Day trace back to 1982, when ICOMOS proposed the idea during a conference in Tunisia. The proposal was later approved by UNESCO in 1983, establishing April 18 as a global day dedicated to heritage awareness.
Events, seminars, and awareness campaigns were held in various countries to mark the day, encouraging communities to value and protect their shared heritage amid growing global challenges.
