ISLAMABAD-UNS-: The federal government has lifted the five-year age restriction on the commercial import of used vehicles, allowing the import of older cars into Pakistan. The decision has sparked debate over its potential impact on local automobile prices, with consumers anticipating greater choices and possible price reductions.
According to a clarification issued by the Ministry of Commerce, the age limit for the commercial import of used vehicles has been abolished with effect from October 30, 2026. Previously, commercially imported used vehicles were required to be no more than five years old. Under the revised policy, importers will now be able to bring in vehicles older than five years.
The ministry clarified that commercial imports of used vehicles will remain subject to the applicable import policy and other legal requirements. Compliance with environmental regulations, vehicle safety standards and other prescribed rules will continue to be mandatory.
Will Vehicle Prices Decline?
Automotive experts believe the removal of the age restriction could expand the range and availability of imported vehicles in Pakistan. The entry of relatively older and potentially less expensive vehicles may put downward pressure on prices in certain segments of the market, while offering consumers more options.
However, a significant and immediate reduction in vehicle prices is not guaranteed. Import duties and taxes, exchange rate fluctuations, shipping costs, vehicle condition and local market demand and supply will continue to play a crucial role in determining prices.
New Auto Policy Also on Government Agenda
The development comes at a time when Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also approved a new auto policy, which is expected to be presented before the federal cabinet for final approval.
The new policy, along with the recent changes to used vehicle import regulations, could have significant implications for Pakistan’s automobile industry, local car manufacturers, importers and consumers.
The actual impact, however, will depend on the final implementation of the new policy, import conditions and the market’s response.
For now, the removal of the five-year age restriction marks a major shift in Pakistan’s vehicle import policy. However, it would be premature to consider the decision a definitive indication of an immediate decline in car prices.
