ISLAMABAD:Paulo Miguel Guedes Domingues, Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to Pakistan, visited the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad, where he held a meeting with Major General Shahid Mahmood Kayani, HI(M) (Retd.), Rector NUML. Brigadier Muhammad Rafiq Khan, Director General (DG) NUML, was also present on the occasion.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on strengthening academic relations between Pakistan and Portugal, with particular emphasis on higher education, institutional cooperation, cultural understanding and the promotion of international academic linkages.
The engagement reflects the shared interest of Pakistan and Portugal in expanding educational cooperation and creating opportunities for meaningful interaction between their academic institutions. Potential areas of collaboration include faculty and student exchanges, joint academic initiatives, research partnerships, language studies, cultural programmes and knowledge-sharing activities.
Ambassador Paulo Miguel Guedes Domingues is a career diplomat who assumed his diplomatic assignment as Portugal’s Ambassador to Pakistan and Afghanistan on 24 March 2026, following the presentation of copies of his Letters of Credence to the Chief of State Protocol at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He subsequently presented his credentials to President Asif Ali Zardari on 7 April 2026 at Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad, formally commencing his tenure as Portugal’s Ambassador to Pakistan. He succeeded Ambassador Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva, widely known as Ambassador Frederico Silva.
Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Domingues served in various diplomatic and senior administrative capacities within Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international diplomatic missions, bringing extensive experience in bilateral relations and international engagement.
As a leading Pakistani institution specialising in modern languages, linguistics, translation, interpretation and international studies, NUML provides an important platform for promoting educational diplomacy and cross-cultural understanding.
The ambassadorial visit represents a positive opportunity to explore avenues for closer institutional engagement between NUML and Portuguese universities and academic organisations. It also underscores the importance of universities as bridges between nations, facilitating dialogue, mutual understanding and long-term international partnerships.
