ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is observing the 28th Youm-e-Takbeer today with renewed commitment to strengthen the country economically and militarily while remembering the historic nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998.
The day is celebrated every year to commemorate Pakistan’s successful nuclear explosions in the Chagai district of Balochistan, which made the country the seventh nuclear power in the world and the first Islamic nuclear state.
Pakistan carried out the nuclear tests in the Rasko hills in response to India’s nuclear explosions, sending a strong message that while Pakistan believes in peace, it is fully capable of defending its sovereignty and national security.
The achievement marked the culmination of years of determination and efforts initiated by former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who laid the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme despite limited resources and international pressure.
The programme later reached its historic milestone under then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who authorized the nuclear tests in 1998 despite global pressure and threats.
Renowned nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan also played a significant role in making Pakistan’s nuclear capability a reality through his dedication and commitment to national defence.
Former President Ziaul Haq’s contribution to advancing the nuclear programme is also acknowledged for supporting and strengthening the project during his tenure.
Across the country, special events, seminars, and ceremonies are being held to pay tribute to the leadership, scientists, and armed forces for making Pakistan’s defence invincible.
