UNS: Players from New Zealand national football team have expressed willingness to play their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Iran national football team outside the United States due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Iran, one of the early qualifiers for the tournament, faces uncertainty over its participation following escalating tensions involving the United States and Israel. The situation has raised concerns about matches scheduled on U.S. soil.
The opening fixture between New Zealand and Iran is currently set to take place in Los Angeles on June 15. However, Iran’s football federation has indicated it may boycott matches held in the United States, prompting discussions about alternative venues.
Midfielder Ryan Thomas stated that Iran rightfully earned their place in the World Cup and said the team would be comfortable playing in another country if required. Possible alternative locations include Mexico or Canada.
New Zealand will be based in San Diego during the tournament, which runs from June 11 to July 19, making travel to nearby venues feasible.
Meanwhile, Claudia Sheinbaum has indicated Mexico would be open to hosting Iran’s matches if needed. The final decision on any venue changes will rest with FIFA.
Winger Kosta Barbarouses added that players would respect decisions made by officials and do not expect any venue shift to negatively impact their campaign.
