NEW YORK -UNS : The New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council has unanimously approved a proposal for Maimonides Health to join NYC Health + Hospitals, marking a major step toward strengthening safety-net healthcare in Brooklyn.
The transaction must still secure additional regulatory and legal approvals under New York State law before it can be finalized.
The council’s decision followed a unanimous subcommittee vote in August and testimony supporting the partnership from major healthcare and labor organizations.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has committed $2.2 billion over five years to support the transaction. The funding includes more than $500 million for capital improvements, modernization of labor and delivery facilities, and the introduction of Epic, a unified electronic health-record system.
NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz said the partnership would preserve Maimonides’ historic identity and culturally responsive healthcare practices while maintaining high-quality services for Brooklyn residents.
Maimonides Health President and CEO Ken Gibbs said the agreement would provide essential financial support to maintain and expand services.
Maimonides operates three hospitals and dozens of community-based facilities across Brooklyn. Joining the public health system would enable it to receive higher Medicaid reimbursement rates, improve financial stability and strengthen care coordination. Patient services will continue without interruption during the transition.
