LAHORE – International Firefighters’ Day is being marked today (Monday) across the world, including in Pakistan, to recognise the courage and dedication of firefighters who risk their lives to protect communities during emergencies.
The day was established in 1999 after a tragic wildfire incident in Australia claimed the lives of five firefighters. Since then, it has served as a reminder of the dangers faced by these professionals in the line of duty.
Firefighters are widely respected for their commitment to saving lives, often working in unpredictable and hazardous conditions. Their responsibilities go beyond extinguishing fires, as they also conduct complex rescue operations that demand high levels of training and specialised equipment.
In Punjab, emergency response saw major progress with the launch of Rescue 1122 in 2004. This initiative strengthened rescue operations and later led to the establishment of a dedicated Fire Rescue Service in 2007.
However, challenges remain. In Karachi, firefighters continue to face difficulties due to limited resources. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has struggled with financial constraints, affecting the efficiency and capacity of its fire brigade.
As the day is observed globally, it not only honours firefighters’ sacrifices but also highlights the urgent need to improve working conditions and resources for these essential responders.
