PESHAWAR: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi have agreed to use constitutional mechanisms to protect the province from terrorism and maintain law and order.
Naqvi held a meeting with Governor Kundi at the Governor House in Peshawar on Sunday, with KP Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police also in attendance.
According to an official statement, the meeting reviewed the political and security situation in the province, including the law and order situation and the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) long march towards Islamabad.
The interior minister and governor agreed that constitutional institutions should play their role in protecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from terrorism and maintaining peace.
The statement said that if the president and prime minister deemed governor’s rule or the imposition of an emergency necessary, the Governor House would fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.
The meeting also discussed the use of government resources during the PTI long march. Officials maintained that using a government helicopter or other state resources for the political march would be in violation of court decisions.
During the meeting, the KP police chief briefed the interior minister on the province’s security situation. The IGP said police across the province remained on high alert amid uncertainty in several areas.
Police personnel from different districts had been called to police lines, while a contingency strategy had been prepared to deal with any emergency situation.
The meeting came as political tensions remained high in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid the PTI’s ongoing long march towards Islamabad.
