ISLAMABAD (UNS): The government and opposition have begun consultations over the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
A key opposition meeting was held in the chamber of Leader of the Opposition Raja Nasir Abbas. Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Salman Akram Raja attended the meeting.
Participants reviewed the constitutional process for the ECP appointments and discussed the opposition’s planned protest on September 27.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leadership was directed to complete preparations for the demonstration.
The opposition also decided to contact political parties and convene an All-Parties Conference to discuss what it described as the country’s deteriorating political and economic situation.
The Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aain Pakistan is scheduled to meet on September 15 to review arrangements for the proposed conference.
According to sources, Mahmood Khan Achakzai has responded to the prime minister’s letter after consulting other opposition leaders and requested a date and time for formal talks.
The prime minister has assured the opposition that the appointments will be made in accordance with the constitutional procedure.
