Spain played its first official international match in 1920 and won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Antwerp. It was a start but success on the biggest stage the World Cup was still far away. Spain made its World Cup debut in 1934 and reached the quarter-finals. It was a good start but nothing more. The 1950 World Cup in Brazil was their best early result where they finished in fourth place. For the next few decades Spain remained a talented but unstable team. They had great players but they could never bring everyone together when they needed it most.
In the 1960s Spain won its first major trophy. The 1964 European Championship on their home soil was a huge moment but the World Cup remained a source of disappointment. In 1966 they lost in the group stage. In 1978 and 1982 they could not make an impact. The 1982 World Cup was held in Spain and the whole nation had high hopes but they lost in the second round. In the 1980s and 1990s Spain regularly qualified for the World Cup but rarely advanced. Losing in the quarter-finals in 1986 and 1994 and 2002 became a painful tradition. They had talented players like Emilio Butragueño and Raúl and Fernando Hierro but the team always fell apart under pressure.
In 2008 everything changed. Spain won the European Championship in Austria and Switzerland. It was their first major trophy in 44 years. The team had a new identity. In 2010 Spain arrived in South Africa as one of the favourites. They lost their first match against Switzerland and everyone started to doubt them but they did not panic. They won every knockout match 1-0. In the final Andrés Iniesta scored in the 116th minute to defeat the Netherlands and Spain won its first World Cup. Two years later they won Euro 2012 and became the first team to win three consecutive major tournaments. In 2014 Spain lost in the group stage of the World Cup. In 2018 they lost to Russia on penalties in the Round of 16. In 2022 they lost to Morocco. In 2024 they won the European Championship again and proved that Spanish football is very much alive. It set the stage for 2026.
This is Spain’s second World Cup. The first came in 2010 featuring legends like Xavi and Iniesta and Puyol and Casillas. This team will always be counted among the best teams of all time. Spain has now played 17 World Cups and won 2 titles.
