WASHINGTON -UNS: The United States plans to reopen a former Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland and establish a military presence at an eastern outpost currently used by Denmark’s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, according to three people familiar with the matter.
The proposed agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland is expected to be signed on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The two locations identified are Narsarsuaq, where the US operated the Bluie West One airbase before closing it in the 1950s, and Mestersvig, a military outpost used by Denmark’s special forces dog sled patrol.
The agreement is scheduled to be signed at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time (1430 GMT), although its text has not yet been made public. Sources familiar with the negotiations said details could change before the signing.
