ISLAMABAD- UNS: Pakistan has recorded a significant scientific breakthrough with the confirmation of lithium in underground brine, marking the country’s first verified discovery of this strategic mineral in such geological formations.
According to researchers, the concentration of lithium is comparable to that found in some of the world’s well-known lithium-bearing geothermal brine deposits.
Lithium is a critical raw material used in the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, large-scale energy storage systems, consumer electronics, and a wide range of advanced technologies. Global demand for the mineral has surged as countries accelerate the transition toward clean energy and electrified transportation.
The discovery has the potential to strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global critical minerals market and could attract investment in mineral exploration, processing, and value-added industries if developed effectively.
Despite being endowed with abundant mineral and natural resources, Pakistan has struggled to fully capitalize on its resource wealth. Analysts have frequently attributed this to weak governance, administrative inefficiencies, corruption, and the absence of long-term resource management policies, factors that have limited the country’s ability to translate its natural assets into sustainable economic growth and public benefit.
Experts believe that transparent policies, modern mining practices, and effective institutional oversight will be essential if Pakistan is to realize the economic and strategic value of its newly identified lithium resources.
