WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has welcomed Iran’s decision to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, describing it as a positive step toward easing regional tensions and restoring stability to global trade routes.
In a statement shared on social media, Trump confirmed that Iran had reopened the strategic waterway, calling attention to its importance for uninterrupted maritime traffic and global energy supplies. He expressed appreciation for the move, noting its significance for international markets.
The development follows an announcement by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who said the Strait of Hormuz had been reopened to all commercial vessels in connection with a ceasefire arrangement linked to recent regional developments. He stated that shipping would continue under coordinated routes established by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization to ensure safe passage.
Araghchi added that the measure was intended to support trade flows and reduce tensions during the ceasefire period, during which maritime activity would remain regulated but uninterrupted.
The Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy chokepoint, handles a significant share of the world’s oil and gas shipments. Any disruption or reopening of the route typically has immediate effects on international energy markets.
Following Iran’s announcement, global oil prices reportedly eased as traders reacted to improved supply stability and reduced risk in the region.
Reports also suggest ongoing diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran, with discussions aimed at sustaining the ceasefire and advancing broader negotiations.
