Snow Leopard dies of starvation in Lutkho, fresh sightings reported in Garam Chashma

CHITRAL (Lower)-UNS:  A rare and endangered snow leopard has reportedly died of starvation in the Lutkho valley of Tehsil Garam Chashma, allegedly due to negligence on the part of the Wildlife Department and lack of timely awareness among the local population.

According to local sources, the weakened snow leopard was spotted by residents and information was circulated through a tehsil-based WhatsApp group.

Despite growing concern and vigilance among the public, no immediate and effective action was taken by the concerned authorities. As a result, the animal succumbed to starvation.

The incident has raised serious questions about the preparedness and response mechanism of the Wildlife Department Chitral Lower in dealing with endangered species, particularly snow leopards, which are protected under national and international conservation laws.

Meanwhile, locals have reported sightings of at least three more snow leopards in the VCC Gobore area of Lutkho, Garam Chashma.

Residents fear that without proper monitoring, protection, and support from the Wildlife Department, these rare animals may face a similar fate.

Environmental activists and community members have urged the Wildlife Department Chitral to take immediate notice of the situation, conduct field assessments, ensure food availability where necessary, and launch awareness campaigns to educate locals on how to respond responsibly when such animals are sighted.

Snow leopards are a symbol of the mountainous ecosystem of Chitral, and their protection is crucial for maintaining ecological balance.

  1. The recent death is being seen as a wake-up call for authorities to strengthen conservation efforts before further losses occur.
