Power Distribution Companies Cause Rs472 Billion Loss to National Exchequer in One Year

ISLAMABAD-UNS : Power distribution companies (DISCOs) have caused a loss of Rs472 billion to the national exchequer during the last year, it has been revealed, placing an additional financial burden on the public and contributing to rising electricity tariffs.
According to official figures, the massive loss is mainly attributed to electricity theft, poor recovery of bills, line losses, and administrative inefficiencies within the distribution system. These losses are ultimately passed on to consumers in the form of higher tariffs, making electricity increasingly unaffordable for low- and middle-income households.
Energy experts say that the continuous increase in power prices has severely affected domestic consumers as well as the industrial sector. Many small and medium-sized industries have either reduced production or shut down operations altogether due to high energy costs, leading to job losses and economic slowdown.
Officials stated that despite repeated reforms and financial assistance, distribution companies have failed to improve performance. Weak governance, outdated infrastructure, and lack of accountability remain key challenges in controlling losses.
Economists warned that unless urgent steps are taken to curb theft, improve bill recovery, and modernise the transmission and distribution network, the losses will continue to grow and further strain the national economy.
The government has reiterated its commitment to restructuring power distribution companies, introducing strict monitoring mechanisms, and ensuring transparency in billing and recovery systems. Authorities have also stressed the need for punitive action against officials found responsible for negligence or corruption.
Analysts believe that meaningful reforms in the power sector are essential not only to reduce financial losses but also to provide relief to consumers and revive industrial growth. They said that affordable and reliable electricity is crucial for economic stability and long-term development.
