NYC Health + Hospitals expands behavioral health workforce through new career initiatives

UNS- NYC Health + Hospitals and Project Renewal have announced expanded efforts to strengthen New York City’s behavioral health workforce through the Care Corps program and several new career development initiatives.
The partnership focuses on preparing individuals for long-term careers in behavioral health care by combining classroom instruction, hands-on clinical exposure, and employment support. Officials said the program helps participants build the empathy, professionalism, and confidence needed to succeed in the field before ever entering a behavioral health unit.
“We believe stable employment can be transformative and that lived experience is a powerful asset in behavioral health care,” said Jaime Madden. She added that the initiative helps New Yorkers facing employment barriers gain practical skills and career opportunities while addressing the city’s growing demand for behavioral health professionals.
The announcement also highlights several workforce development programs launched by NYC Health + Hospitals, including:
The Behavioral Health Nursing Career Ladder, offering educational and financial support for staff pursuing nursing degrees in exchange for a three-year service commitment.
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner fellowships designed to strengthen clinical skills and support career advancement.
The Psychiatric Physician Assistant Career Pathways Program, which gives PA students behavioral health clinical rotations and training opportunities.
The NextGen Public Psychiatry Leadership Program for third-year psychiatry residents, featuring mentorship, lectures, and site visits to encourage careers in public-sector psychiatry.
The BH4NYC Loan Repayment Program, which provides student debt relief for behavioral health clinicians working within the health system.
Officials said these initiatives are aimed at addressing workforce shortages while creating sustainable career pathways in behavioral health services across New York City.
