KSA emerges as key mediator in regional and Global conflicts

UNS Report

Over the past several decades, Saudi Arabia has strengthened its position as a major diplomatic actor, playing an important role in conflict resolution and mediation at regional and international levels. The Kingdom’s efforts have extended from the Middle East to Europe and South Asia, underscoring its focus on dialogue and stability.
Saudi Arabia supported reconciliation initiatives that helped end the Lebanese Civil War in 1989–90, contributing to the Taif Agreement. During Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990–91, the Kingdom played a central diplomatic role in mobilizing regional and international support to restore peace and security in the Gulf.
In the following years, Riyadh engaged in mediation efforts linked to conflicts in Yemen, Syria and intra-Gulf disputes, promoting negotiation over escalation. Its diplomatic outreach expanded globally in 2022, when Saudi channels facilitated humanitarian dialogue and prisoner exchanges during the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
From 2023 to 2026, Saudi Arabia has also worked to ease tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan by encouraging dialogue and offering a neutral platform for engagement between the two sides.
Analysts say the Kingdom’s mediation strategy reflects its use of political influence, economic strength and regional leadership to promote peaceful solutions, prevent escalation and reinforce international norms of conflict resolution.
Commenting on Riyadh’s diplomatic role, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently said that “relations with Saudi Arabia are a guarantee of peace in the entire region,” highlighting the Kingdom’s growing reputation as a stabilizing force in international affairs.
