ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has postponed his scheduled visit to Switzerland after the signing of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, in which Pakistan played an important mediating role.
The development follows Shehbaz’s endorsement of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a diplomatic framework aimed at reducing regional tensions and restoring stability in key trade corridors, including the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The agreement was signed electronically by the US and Iranian leadership, prompting a shift in diplomatic engagements across several countries. The accord is expected to pave the way for further negotiations and confidence-building measures between the two sides.
Iranian officials have stated that no final decision has yet been made regarding Switzerland-related diplomatic engagements. However, Tehran reiterated its stance on maritime sovereignty and emphasized that future discussions would continue through official delegations.
The peace initiative has been welcomed as a significant step toward regional stability, with Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts drawing attention for helping facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Officials hope the agreement will contribute to easing tensions, reopening trade routes, and creating momentum for broader negotiations in the region.
