CHANDIGARH -UNS : The Indian Punjab Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution demanding the immediate reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor to facilitate Sikh pilgrims travelling to one of their holiest religious sites in Pakistan.
According to Indian media reports, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains moved the resolution, which received unanimous support from lawmakers across the political spectrum.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also strongly endorsed the demand, urging the Indian central government to take immediate measures to restore access to the corridor and ensure uninterrupted religious travel for Sikh pilgrims.
The resolution described the Kartarpur Corridor as an important symbol of religious harmony, peace and shared cultural heritage between Pakistan and India. It also called for simplifying travel procedures and removing administrative obstacles faced by pilgrims visiting Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur.
The corridor provides Sikh devotees from India with visa-free access to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, one of the most sacred places in Sikhism, located in Pakistan’s Narowal district.
India closed the corridor on May 7, 2025, following the Pahalgam incident, a development that disrupted religious visits by Sikh pilgrims.
The unanimous resolution reflects growing demands within Indian Punjab for the restoration of access to the sacred shrine.
Political observers have also questioned the continued restrictions, arguing that religious pilgrimage should not become a casualty of political tensions and security disputes between the two neighbouring countries.
The demand has placed renewed focus on the importance of protecting religious freedoms and facilitating access to sacred sites, regardless of political differences.
