OTTAWA- UNS: Canadian authorities have confirmed fatalities and injuries following an incident at a military base in Alberta, prompting an official response from the country’s defence leadership.
Defence Minister David McGuinty said late Saturday that people had been killed and injured in an incident at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in western Canada.
“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” McGuinty said in a statement.
Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reported on social media platform X that a serious incident had occurred at the facility, resulting in a major fire.
However, officials have not yet disclosed the number of casualties or provided details about the cause and nature of the incident.
McGuinty said further information would be released in the coming hours and days as more details become available.
CFB Wainwright is located approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton and is regarded as one of Canada’s busiest army bases.
