NEW DELHI (UNS) — BRICS leaders called for “maximum restraint” in the Middle East on Saturday, issuing a joint declaration on the opening day of their summit in New Delhi despite differences among member states over the conflict.
The 11-nation group urged countries to avoid actions that could intensify the fighting between the United States and Iran. It called for the protection of civilians and national sovereignty, as well as the uninterrupted movement of trade, energy supplies and shipping through the region.
The declaration also expressed serious concern over attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. It said nuclear safety and security must be upheld even during armed conflict.
Addressing the crises in Gaza, Lebanon, Sudan and Syria, BRICS called for ceasefires and humanitarian access. The joint statement marks a change from a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in May, when disagreements prevented them from agreeing on a common Middle East text.
