ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia has appointed Major General (Retired) Rajeh Al-Buqami, a senior Saudi diplomat, as its new Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, succeeding Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malki. The appointment reflects the Kingdom’s continued commitment to strengthening its long-standing strategic partnership with Pakistan and advancing cooperation across a broad range of sectors.

Ambassador Al-Buqami formally assumed his diplomatic responsibilities after taking the oath of office alongside a number of newly appointed Saudi ambassadors assigned to represent the Kingdom in friendly and brotherly countries. The ceremony forms part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to expand its diplomatic outreach and reinforce bilateral relations with key regional and international partners.

The appointment is widely regarded as the beginning of a new phase in Saudi-Pakistan relations. Diplomatic circles expect Ambassador Al-Buqami to build upon the strong foundations established by his predecessor while further enhancing cooperation in political, economic, defence, security, investment, cultural, and educational fields.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have enjoyed decades of close and multifaceted relations based on shared religious, historical, and strategic interests. Their partnership encompasses cooperation in regional security, counterterrorism, defence, trade, energy, labour, and people-to-people exchanges. The Kingdom remains one of Pakistan’s most important strategic partners and a significant source of investment and economic support.

Observers believe Ambassador Al-Buqami’s military background, combined with his diplomatic experience, positions him well to strengthen strategic dialogue between Riyadh and Islamabad, particularly at a time of evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and South Asia.

His tenure is expected to focus on expanding bilateral trade, facilitating Saudi investment in Pakistan, promoting collaboration in energy and infrastructure projects, and encouraging greater cooperation in technology, education, tourism, and human resource development. The new envoy is also anticipated to play an important role in supporting the implementation of agreements signed between the two countries and in exploring new opportunities for economic partnership.

The appointment also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader foreign policy objectives of enhancing international partnerships and advancing the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which places significant emphasis on economic diversification, global investment, and stronger international engagement. Pakistan, meanwhile, continues to regard Saudi Arabia as one of its closest allies, with both countries maintaining regular high-level political consultations and strategic coordination on regional and international issues.

Analysis

The appointment of Major General (Retd.) Rajeh Al-Buqami carries significance beyond a routine diplomatic transition. It reflects Saudi Arabia’s intention to maintain strong momentum in its relationship with Pakistan at a time when regional cooperation, economic integration, and security coordination have become increasingly important.

His military leadership experience is expected to contribute to closer defence and security cooperation, while his diplomatic role will likely focus on expanding trade, attracting Saudi investment, and strengthening institutional partnerships. As both countries pursue ambitious economic agendas, the ambassador is expected to facilitate collaboration in sectors including mining, renewable energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology, healthcare, and tourism.

The appointment also comes amid growing Saudi engagement with Asian economies and Pakistan’s efforts to attract foreign direct investment, making economic diplomacy a central priority for both governments.
