US Midterm Elections 2026: Democrats Make Major Gains, Take Control of Senate

Washington – UNS : Democrats have made significant gains in the 2026 US midterm elections, securing control of the Senate and moving closer to a possible majority in the House of Representatives, according to preliminary election reports.

The results could shift the balance of power in Congress and pose a major challenge to President Donald Trump during the remaining two years of his presidency.

According to preliminary figures reported by Al Jazeera, Democrats have won 102 seats in the 435-member House of Representatives, while Republicans have secured 58 seats. The vote count is still underway, and the final outcome will determine which party controls the chamber.

A party needs at least 218 seats to secure a majority in the House. Democrats are seeking to gain additional seats and potentially take control of the chamber from Republicans.

In the Senate, Democrats have reportedly secured a majority after winning several key races. Democratic candidate Troy Jackson defeated Republican Senator Susan Collins in Maine, while the party also recorded significant victories in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, Ohio and Iowa.

At least six Senate seats are reported to have shifted from Republicans to Democrats, marking a major setback for the Republican Party.

Economic concerns, including inflation, rising fuel prices, housing costs and healthcare expenses, along with public reaction to President Trump’s policies, are believed to have played a significant role in shaping the election results.

The outcome is being viewed as a major test of public support for the Trump administration. A Democratic-controlled Congress could increase scrutiny of the president’s legislative agenda, government spending and executive decisions.

However, the midterm election results will not end Trump’s presidency. He will remain in office until the completion of his presidential term.

With vote counting still underway, the figures remain preliminary and may change as additional results are reported.
Election Update:

Senate: Democrats 51, Republicans 39 — preliminary reported count.
House of Representatives: Democrats 147, Republicans 94 — according to an earlier live count.
House Majority: 218 seats required.
Key Senate Gains: Texas, Ohio, Kansas, North Carolina and South Carolina, among other states.
Final results are awaited as counting continues across the country.
