Islamabad: Former Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General (Retired) Qamar Javed Bajwa was admitted to a hospital early Tuesday morning after sustaining injuries in a fall at his residence, family sources confirmed.
According to initial reports, Gen (R) Bajwa slipped in the washroom of his home at approximately 4:30am. As a result of the fall, he suffered multiple injuries, including a head injury. He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Sources close to the family said he is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors are closely monitoring his condition. No official medical bulletin has been issued so far.
General Bajwa served as Pakistan’s 16th Chief of Army Staff from November 2016 to November 2022. Commissioned into the Pakistan Army in 1980 through the 16th PMA Long Course, he joined the Baloch Regiment and held several key command and staff appointments during his distinguished military career.
Prior to assuming the role of army chief, he served as Inspector General Training and Evaluation at General Headquarters and commanded the Rawalpindi Corps (X Corps), one of the Army’s most strategically significant formations. He also participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions during his service.
In August 2019, then-Prime Minister Imran Khan granted him a three-year extension in service, which was subsequently formalised through legislation passed by Parliament. Gen (R) Bajwa completed his extended tenure and retired on November 29, 2022, handing over command to General Asim Munir.
Since his retirement, General (R) Bajwa has largely maintained a low public profile.
