Erosion of barbed wire by terrorists: A sign of serious challenge?

By Saleem Bukhari
The continuous tension on the Pak-Afghan border, the cutting of barbed wire by terrorist organizations and the continuous threat alerts of suicide bombers have once again made the people of Pakistan anxious. For some time now, the threat alerts of the presence of suicide bombers in different cities of Pakistan have made the people in a new fear, while the suicide blast in the federal capital Islamabad has further strengthened this tremor.
On the other hand, the serious tension on the Pak-Afghan border has also become a big problem for the past several months. Pakistani security forces were targeted several times from Afghan territory in Kuram, Ghulam Khan, Bajaur and Mohmand areas, in which many soldiers of Pakistan Army were martyred. There were a few similar incidents at the Chaman border after which it was closed for a month, but opened after continuous protests by Afghans.
After that, the videos of terrorists cutting the barbed wire on the Pak-Afghan border and the declaration of the area up to “Attock district as part of Afghanistan” sparked a new debate across Pakistan. These videos were also released by ISPR.
After this 16-member delegation of Pakistani religious scholars and elders was sent to Afghanistan to discuss this serious issue, in which Sheikh Maulvi Gul Muhammad, Hafiz Abdul Qayyum, Qari Muhammad Aslam, Maulvi Rozi Khan, Hafiz Sirajuddin, Mufti Samiullah, Maulvi Zainullah, Mufti Muhammad Qasim Haqqani, Haji Attaullah Khan, Malik Abdul Khaliq, Haji Imran Kakar, Haji Asmatullah Nurzai, Haji Muhammad Sadiq Alizai, Sardar Barat Khan, Haji Ghosullah and Mufti Muhammad Qasim were included. The delegation had a discussion with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in a friendly atmosphere and received positive assurances from Afghanistan as well, but a few days later, another video went viral by terrorist organizations in which a Vigo vehicle can be seen entering Pakistani territory after cutting the barbed wire.
Former Prime Minister Imran Khan also spoke on the above issue in a TV program and said that “the Afghan Taliban have been busy tearing down the fence on the border for a long time and I had discussed this issue with General Bajwa many times but he did not pay attention to it, so this is the reason why today TTP has installed its flags in Mir Ali and Miranshah”.
These days, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto’s announcement of American funds to protect the Pak-Afghan border has become the most discussed topic of social media and international observers. The majority of people seem to object to American funds and in their view, the United States itself is responsible for terrorism in Pakistan and Afghanistan, so why is it taking so much interest in the Pakistan-Afghan border today? However, some observers believe that Pakistan’s economic condition is extremely precarious at the moment and we do not have sufficient capital to fight a long war. In such a situation, if America wants to take this responsibility, it is a positive step.
