A special court in the federal capital on Wednesday turned down the bail plea filed by PTI Senator Azam Swati in the controversial tweets case.
Special Judge Central Azam Khan announced the verdict stating that the PTI stalwart committed the same office twice, hence, his bail petition was denied. The judge reserved the verdict earlier on Saturday after hearing arguments from both sides.
During the hearing, prosecutor Rizwan Abbasi stated the twitter account, which was used for posting controversial statements against the institutions, was of Mr Swati and it was a verified account. Swati’s account was followed by famous journalists and political personalities, he said, adding that the senator had never disowned the account. While wrapping up his arguments, the prosecutor asked the court that bail should not be granted to the suspect in the case.
However, the counsel for Mr Swati contended that his client could not be booked under cybercrime charges over mere screenshots of the tweet.
Last week, a district and sessions court in Islamabad approved a 14-day extension in judicial remand of the PTI senator — hours after he was shifted to Islamabad after cases against him in Sindh were disposed of for being ineffective .
The Sindh High Court (SHC) conducted hearing on plea of the PTI senator’s son against registration of cases against his father. After hearing arguments, the SHC ordered the provincial authorities that no more cases should be registered against Mr Swati.
